How to Play

Although Powerball is entirely based on luck, experienced players will tell you strategy has its place. Still, if you’re new to the game, you can start slow by following these simple steps:

  1. Go to your preferred MI Lottery retail store and pick up a payslip.
  2. Choose five white ball numbers ranging from 1 to 69. You also need to indicate one red Powerball number between 1 and 26. You can select an Easy Pick option and have the numbers randomly selected for you if you want.
  3. For $1 more, you can activate the Power Play feature that boosts non-jackpot rewards by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or even 10x.
  4. You can choose to participate in up to 30 consecutive Powerball draws with the numbers you selected.
  5. Once you’re satisfied with your numbers, go to the retailer, and they will print the ticket.
  6. Now, you just wait and see if your numbers are drawn!

If you’re playing online, the process is slightly different. Here’s how to participate in Michigan Powerball drawings online:

  1. Select the option for buying tickets online:
    1. Easy Pick — Choose tickets that will randomly select the numbers.
    2. Pick My Numbers — Generate your own ticket by choosing five numbers from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number between 1 and 26.
    3. Combo My Numbers — Select 6 to 10 random numbers from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number – the site will then generate tickets with all possible combinations of your chosen numbers.
    4. Use Favorite Purchase — Purchase tickets from a previously saved number combination.
  2. You can activate the Power Play option – if you so choose – and increase the odds of hitting the non-jackpot prizes.
  3. Review your Cart, you also have the option to save the tickets under Favorite Purchase.
  4. Click on Checkout and pay for your tickets.
  5. Visit the website and see the timeline for the next draw.

You can watch the draw on TV or check the results on the official Michigan Powerball website.

  • In 2012, Donald Lawson of Lapeer was the winner of the largest Powerball prize. He hit the $337 million jackpot but decided to take the lump sum, going home with $224 million before taxes.
  • In 2010, a person who has chosen to stay anonymous bought a Powerball ticket in the Uptown Bookstore in Highland Park, which landed them a staggering $128.6 million!
