How to Play the California Daily Derby

The Daily Derby is one of the more unique games in the California Lottery lineup. You play by betting on the outcome of a virtual “horse race.” (Actually, the California Lottery Commission uses automated drawing machines for this game, same as other draw games.)

How to Play:

1. Select Horses

   On your Daily Derby playslip, mark 3 horses that you believe will finish in the first, second, and third place. Or select ‘Quick Pick' to have horses randomly picked for you.

   In the image below, we are marking Lucky Star for first, Big Ben for second and Gold Rush for the third place on CA Daily Derby playslip, from a pool of 12 horses. Please note – do not use red ink on the playslip given it blends in with the primary color of CA Lottery play slips.

   

2. Select Race Time

   Then you indicate the time that you think it will take the first horse to finish. This is called the Race Time, and it can be any time from 1:40:00 (one minute, forty seconds) to 1:49:99 (one minute, 49.99 seconds). All you have to do is provide the last 3 digits of your Race Time by selecting one number from each column.

   For example, as shown in the image below, to bet 1:49:79, you would mark 9:79 for your ticket and mark 9 on the 1st column, 7 on the 2nd column and 9 on the 3rd column. Alternatively, you can select ‘Quick Pick' to have the computer pick the race time for you.

   

3. Advance Play (Optional)

   You can play the same horses and race time for up to 14 consecutive draws by marking Advance Play.

   

4. Purchase the ticket

   Daily Derby tickets cost $2.00 for each play, per draw. Upon purchase, check your ticket immediately and make sure that the horses, race time and draw(s) you marked on your playslip are correctly reflected on the ticket. Remember – your ticket is the receipt and not your playslip. We also recommend signing the back of the ticket to indicate ownership.

How to Win the California Daily Derby Prizes

You get different prizes depending on how many horses and places you match, as well as whether you match the Race Time.

• Grand Prize: If all three of your chosen horses are drawn by the lottery in the correct order and you also picked the right Race Time, you win the Grand Prize.
• Trifecta: If all three of your chosen horses are drawn by the lottery in the correct order, you win the Trifecta.
• Race Time Only: If the race time, which is the time taken by the first-place horse, matches the time you picked, you win the ‘race time' price.
• Exacta: If your chosen horses for the 1st and 2nd place match the 1st and 2nd place horses drawn by the lottery, you win the Exacta.
• Win: When your chosen 1st place horse matches the 1st place horse drawn by the lottery.

The Daily Derby has a rolling jackpot, and other prize tiers depend on the amount you wager for each game. Prize amounts can vary from draw to draw.

California Daily Derby Drawing Schedule

Daily Derby draws are held every day at 6:30 PM PST. The draw is held immediately after sales close, so you have up to 6:29 PM to buy eligible tickets.

How to Claim Your Daily Derby Prize

Prizes up to $599 can be claimed at any participating cashing retailer. For prizes $600 or more, you need to fill the Winner's Claim Form and your original ticket to the address on the claim form : California Lottery, 730 North 10th Street, Sacramento, CA 95811-0336.

You have up to 190 days after the winning draw to claim the ticket. If you chose to play consecutive draws using ‘Advance Play, you can claim prizes before the last draw printed on the ticket. Just get an exchange ticket from the retailer for the remaining draws before mailing your winning ticket in.
