By taking part in New Mexico Powerball, you’ll get a chance to win some great prizes and help the state raise funds for education at the same time. If you haven’t played this game before, the guide below has all the information to help you start on the right foot.

How to Play New Mexico Powerball

Powerball is a simple game that offers huge cash prizes. Each ticket costs $2, and for a few bucks more some extra options will increase your winning potential. Let’s go through the whole process for getting your hands on a New Mexico Powerball ticket:

  • Find the closest Powerball retail shop and ask for a Powerball ticket.
  • Pick five numbers ranging from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number ranging from 1 to 26. If you want, select the ‘Quick Pick’ option and have the computer generate the numbers for you.
  • You can add the ‘Power Play’ option and multiply your prize 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times for an additional dollar. You can do this by marking the appropriate box on the Powerball playslip.
  • You can also choose to participate in up to 20 consecutive drawings with the same numbers. To do so, you need to mark the designated box labelled as Multi Draw on the payslip. Also, you can ask your retailer for a Multi-Draw ticket, which costs $2 per play per drawing.
  • Once you get your ticket, don’t forget to sign it and wait for the next drawing.

Powerball Drawing Schedule

New Mexico Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 8:59pm Mountain Time. You can purchase your tickets until 8:00pm Mountain Time for each night's drawing.

Payouts, Odds, and Rules

Playing New Mexico Powerball offers nine ways to win a prize. The biggest prize is the jackpot, and if a single drawing produces more than one jackpot winner the prize is shared equally.

In fact, all Powerball prizes can become pari-mutuel and resultantly be reduced if the prize claim goes over the designated prize fund. Each jackpot prize that isn’t won joins the jackpot fund for the next drawing.

You should also note that the 10x multiplier only applies when the jackpot stands below $150 million. When it comes to prizes worth $50,000 or less, they can all be multiplied using the Power Play option. However, the prize for matching five white balls will always be capped at $2,000,000 regardless of the multiplier number.

Your overall odds of winning a Powerball prize are around 1:25. So, if you’re interested in the odds for each prize, check out the table below:

Numbers Matched Prize Odds
5 WB + Red Powerball Jackpot 1:292,201,338
5 WB $1 million 1:11,688,053
4 WB + Red Powerball $50,000 1:913,129
4 WB $100 1:36,525
3 WB + Red Powerball $100 1:14,494
3 WB $7 1:579
2 WB + Red Powerball $7 1:701
1 WB + Red Powerball $4 1:91
One Red Powerball $4 1:38

If you win the jackpot, you can either claim it in cash in a single lump sum or as an annuity of 30 payments over 29 years. For the annuity option, the Powerball Group Rules set a percentage by which the payment increases each year throughout the payment period. Note that all jackpot prizes worth $2,000,000 or less will be paid in a single payment.

How to Claim New Mexico Powerball Prizes

No matter which Powerball prize is won, the winner should have 90 days to claim it. However, the prizes sometimes come with a shorter deadline, which is why you should always check the game rules in advance.

When it comes to claiming a prize, there are three different options depending on the prize won:

  • $1 to $600 — claim it at any New Mexico Lottery retail shop or by mail. You don’t need to fill a claim form to pick up prizes ranging from a dollar to $600;
  • $601 to $99,999 — you can either claim it at the lottery headquarters or by mail with a completed claim form;
  • $100,000 or more — you can only claim it in person at lottery headquarters.

To claim a prize via mail, use the following address:

New Mexico Lottery
P.O. Box 93190
Albuquerque, NM 87199-3190

If you’re lucky enough to claim a prize higher than $1 million, you might experience a delayed payment for periods of three weeks or more.
