About the North Dakota Lottery
The North Dakota Lottery is one of the younger state lotteries in the US, having only started in 2003. Unlike many states, North Dakota law limits the state lottery to offering only multi-state draw games. The North Dakota Lottery cannot run instant games or state-exclusive draw games.
Since its inception, the North Dakota Lottery has paid out over $127 million in prizes. Most of the North Dakota Lottery’s earnings go into the state’s general fund, as well as a multi-jurisdictional drug task force and a compulsive gambling prevention and treatment fund.
North Dakota Lottery Tickets
You can buy North Dakota Lottery tickets at any of the 400+ authorized retailers across the state. Generally, you can buy tickets from 5:30 AM to 2:30 AM CT, any day of the week (as long as your chosen retailer is open).
Players have up to 180 days from the draw to claim prizes.
Can I buy ND Lottery tickets online?
Yes! North Dakota is one of the few lotteries that allows you to play draw games entirely online. You can do so through the North Dakota Lottery mobile app or by signing into your North Dakota Players Club account on a computer.
However, you’ll need to provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. This allows the North Dakota Lottery to verify that you are a legal-age resident and, consequently, eligible to buy ND Lottery tickets.
You can pay for the tickets through credit or debit cards. However, to avoid possible issues with declined transactions (due to some credit card companies’ processing rules), the North Dakota Lottery recommends paying for tickets using electronic check transfer (ACH processing).
Any winnings will be deposited directly to the “winning account” you designate on your profile. However, winnings above $600 will require player verification. In these cases, the North Dakota Lottery will reach out to you with more instructions.
ND Lottery Tickets Payment Methods
Unlike many state lotteries (like Arkansas and Louisiana), North Dakota allows players to buy tickets using debit cards and cheques. Accepted payment methods will still depend on each retailer, though.
North Dakota doesn’t allow players to buy lottery tickets using credit cards.
North Dakota Lottery Games and Drawing Schedules
Lucky for Life
North Dakota is one of 20+ states that run Lucky for Life, which promises $1000 a day for life to jackpot winners. Other participating states include Delaware, Idaho, and South Dakota.
Lucky for Life players must pick 5 numbers from 1-48 and a Lucky Ball number from 1-18. To win the jackpot, players must match all 6 winning draw numbers. If players only match the 5 regular numbers but not the Lucky Ball, they will get the second prize of $25,000 a year for life.
Lucky for Life draws take place every Monday and Thursday.
Lotto America
Lotto America is the North Dakota Lottery’s biggest game, with a starting jackpot of $2 million. The top prize rolls over with each draw until somebody wins.
Lotto America players must select 5 numbers from 1-52 and another number (the Star Ball digit) from 1-10. To win the jackpot, a player’s chosen numbers must match all six winning draw numbers.
Players may also pay an additional $1 to activate the Star Ball Bonus, which multiplies any prize (except the jackpot) by the multiplier drawn for the day.
Lotto America draws are held every Wednesday and Saturday.
2by2
North Dakota runs the multi-state 2by2 game alongside Kansas and Nebraska. 2by2 draws take place every day, and each draw carries a fixed jackpot of $22,000. Prizes are awarded as lump sums.
2by2 players must select two numbers from 1-26 in their playslip’s Red area and another two numbers from 1-26 in their playslip’s White area.
Players can also double any prizes they win on Tuesday draws by purchasing a ticket for consecutive draws in multiples of 7 (e.g., 7 consecutive draws, 14 consecutive draws, and so on).
Notable Winners of North Dakota Lotteries
North Dakota allows lottery winners to remain anonymous. Nevertheless, here are some of the North Dakota Lottery’s notable winners in 2018 and 2019:
- A player from Mapleton won $25,000 a year for life playing Lucky for Life
- Another player from West Fargo also won $25,000 a year for life playing Lucky for Life
- A player from Bismarck won $44,000 on a doubled jackpot for a 2by2 Tuesday draw
- David, also from Bismarck, won $44,000 on a doubled 2by2 Tuesday draw jackpot
- Mitchell from Manvel also won $44,000 through a 2by2 Tuesday jackpot doubler
North Dakota Lottery Instant and Scratch-Off Games
Unlike most state lotteries, the North Dakota Lottery doesn’t offer any instant or scratch-off games.
North Dakota Lottery Second Chances
What is Second Chance?
Second chance games allow you to enter non-winning draw game tickets or scratch cards into new games. This gives you another chance to win prizes. Which tickets are eligible, the frequency of second-chance draws and the prizes on offer all depend on the lottery operator.

How does Second Chance work for the ND Lottery?
Unlike many state lotteries, most of North Dakota’s second-chance promotions don’t involve the direct entry of non-winning tickets into new game draws.
Instead, players who want to participate in promotions must enter their tickets for points through their North Dakota Lottery Players Club accounts. They can then use these points to enter limited-time promotions.
Luckily, Players Club registration is free and can be done online through the North Dakota Lottery Players Club portal.
